Zurich, February 2014
I don’t normally describe my photos or explain why I like them, but I thought I’d make an exception and say a few words about this one.
This is by far my favorite shot from my recent trip to Zurich. I’ve always been a sucker for street photos of couples kissing—from Doisneau’s famous “Le Baiser de l’Hotel de Ville” to Peter Turnley’s “Brasserie de l’Isle Saint-Louis, 1994” (Peter Turnley is a contemporary master at this!).
In my shot above, I love how the couple has found some relative privacy and seclusion while sitting in public among a number of others, each of whom are sitting alone. Perhaps it speaks to the ability for two people to meet and find romance in a large city—or maybe that loneliness is ever-present for some, despite always being near couples in love.
